We’ve had a flurry of activity on Maisto Mountain since I last posted. On Oct. 2, Biggins Construction arrived with the materials to install our energy-efficient white metal roof! It took a couple days to complete the installation, and we now have a roof on our home. Brad and I both said that a white roof was certainly the right choice for us. We both really like the look of that white roof contrasting against the hills and countryside. On Oct. 6, Biggins Construction began the framing of our walkout porch from the upstairs great room and completed that in a couple of days. They provided a wonderful diagonal design for the porch, and we’re going to have many nice afternoons sitting out watching the wildlife and the breeze over the pond.
I (Sarah) was able to visit the site on Oct. 9 & 10 to take a look for myself and to show some family the progress. It’s really exciting to see the roof and the porch on the home! We also have plumbing and electrical work being done on the inside. I was home to celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary on Oct. 12, and we decided rather spontaneously that we would drive to Madisonville, Ky., on our anniversary morning for breakfast and to pick up a laundry sink that their Lowe’s had in stock before we spent the evening in Owensboro, Ky., the city where we were married. This laundry sink was the model that we both liked, and the Madisonville, Ky., Lowe’s was the only one in the local area or in the Avon, Ind., area that had it in stock. Sometimes, it is truly the little things that make you happy. So, happy anniversary – we bought a laundry sink, enjoyed a beautiful drive through Kentucky, and had a nice breakfast – grits included – at the Dinky Diner on the square of Madisonville, Ky. Check it out sometime if you’re in town!
This week (starting Oct. 15), we have been having our septic dug! So far, we have three of the five fingers in and the tank installed. Thanks to Donnie Evrard for the great work! A septic tank might not seem that exciting, but it is oh-so important to be done well for your home. We were very happy to see this project being done this week.
In the meantime, Brad has finished the downstairs insulation project and now is working on framing up the walls downstairs, which is a time-consuming project. He has the bathroom door and wall framed so far. Brad also has frozen several quarts of persimmon pulp in the evening. We made homemade persimmon cookies when I was visiting, just to try out a new recipe. They were a hit! We’ll be making more cookies and persimmon recipes as we get the time and learning how to use this wonderful fruit that grows naturally on the land.
More plumbing work will be done this weekend. We are excited for every bit of progress as it takes place!
