Something happened today a few weeks ahead of our expectation. The report from Brad, who spent the day at Maisto Mountain, is this: We have officially broken ground on our home! It took our builder, Biggins Construction of Boonville, three tries to position the foundation “dig” for the home, which was no fault of the crew. Apparently, the first time the crew started digging, they hit water. As I’m sure you can guess, this is huge trouble when you are building a home with a walk-out basement. (Too bad it wasn’t a Beverly Hillbillies experience of “Black Gold" or "Texas Tea,” right?) However, striking water – or anything else, for that matter – is also no surprise when you’re building on reclaimed land that was previously drift mined. If I understand correctly, the water had collected underground in a former ravine area that had been filled in with dirt. Sigh. The second test dig didn’t work either. However, at the third attempt, we have a “go” as to where the home’s foundation can be correctly dug! It’s a little closer to the drive and the barn than we thought, but you expect some changes when you are building a home. We have 70 acres, so repositioning the house a few feet is not a big deal. The pictures won't look like much to most of you, but for Brad and me, it's a huge day! The house is under way! We are both excited and know a lot of work is ahead. We’re ready. Let the work – and more immediately – the digging, begin! We will keep you posted. | |
