We have a few updates to report since last month, and we’re starting to make some nice progress! Last weekend (while Sarah was traveling to Pennsylvania for her godson’s first communion), Brad traveled to southern Indiana to work more on our home project. We now have a full-fledged 400-amp pedestal built on the property. This means that the trenching for our electricity and water, which is no less short of a mile, will be able to start sometime this month! After the trenching is completed and service acquired, we can apply for a house permit. You can see in the pictures the contraption that composes a 400-amp meter pedestal. Now, before you think Brad is a genius, we need to thank my brother, Eric Shrode. Brad says this DIY project would not have been possible without him. If you don’t know my brother, Eric, this is my brother who fixed our family’s doorbell when he was 4 years old and has seriously been fixing bigger and bigger things ever since. We aren’t sure what we’d do without him. Brad also met with Greg Biggins of Biggins Construction in Boonville to iron out details. We have selected Biggins Construction to build our home, with Brad and my Uncle Jim doing some detail work where they can . We interviewed two other local builders, but we found that Greg was the right person for us. We felt he had the same vision and expectations for the project in addition to being trustworthy and reputable. It’s a difficult decision, for sure. So, once the water and electricity are established at the property, we can obtain a building permit and get going on the home with Greg. We also are happy to report that we have a huge hole in our current Avon barn. We sold our 1952 John Deere B tractor! Yes, it was a cool tractor the three times it ran, but we were not equipped to keep it running, nor did we want to see the price to move this hunk of metal across 250 miles. I also have to say that after seeing this antique get loaded on a trailer, I am convinced it was not meant to run on the steep southern Indiana hills that we own. I was praying the tractor wasn’t going to tip when the men who purchased it were loading it! We also have a report from my parents and our barn contractor, B&A Construction of Huntingburg, that the barn construction has started! My dad said the dirt work for the foundation looked really good, and it shouldn’t be long now until we have a barn. We are anxious to visit later in May to see the progress. The barn construction has been delayed a few weeks because of the very rainy spring we’ve had, but you cannot control the weather. So for now, our progress report is an electric box, holes, and selecting a builder, but we’ll take it. Not everything is as exciting as bricks and mortar. | |
