Our framing work continued this week on Maisto Mountain, and essentially, all the primary framing for the basement and main floor are now complete! We expect roof trusses to arrive early this week so that the roof work can begin.
Brad and I were able to walk through the home together on Friday afternoon. Walking through at this stage is fun because nothing is finished, but we could see clearly the exact size of the rooms and closets as well as the flow and layout of our home. However, at this point, we still only have our mind’s visualization of what the final product will be as far as the home being our living space. Imagination and visualization are key at this point! Walking through, though, I think we both thought the space felt like what we had planned, and the flow is very comfortable for us. We also discovered walking through that some rooms look slightly bigger to us than we originally thought, and others look slightly smaller (nothing major on either end), but it is often a visual trick. When you measure, the room is exactly the size you think it should be. Your eyes are simply not adjusted to looking at the space. The walk-through also gave us an opportunity to discuss future furniture placement and size up a couple of closet areas in the basement that still need to be shaped up at this point.
In addition to our building process, we are having fun getting to know the local area. I grew up in the area, but so much has changed since then that we have many new places to discover together. This weekend, Brad and I went to Owensboro, Ky., just across the river from where we will live, to check out the new Bill Smothers Park on the riverfront. The park is absolutely gorgeous! You can walk the paved walkway with gorgeous views of the mighty Ohio River, sit in one of numerous metal “porch swings” and watch the boat traffic or wait for the sunset, enjoy the numerous fountains, or take children to an extremely nice play area. On Fridays in the summer, bands play on the riverfront, and various vendors serve up food and beverages. I even spotted a food truck, which certainly reminded us of Indianapolis. Brad and I had dinner at Another Broken Egg on the west end of the riverfront. For my Indianapolis friends, this restaurant reminded me of a southern-style Petit a Chou, which some of you know is my favorite downtown restaurant. I ordered a lobster and brie omelet with a side of cheese grits. We had biscuit beignets with honey marmalade to start. Everything was made with fresh ingredients and simply wonderful. While I love the local barbecue, pork chops, and fried chicken as much as the next southern Indiana/northern Kentucky-raised individual, it’s really nice to find a local bistro that I can add to my list. It’s doubly nice to find one that has options with brie, pesto, grits, and lobster on the menu. I have learned to love that kind of variety living near our capital city.
We are looking forward to seeing our Maisto Mountain home with the roof. We’ll keep you updated as progress occurs!
