Week one of house building is finished, and it’s been very interesting! The result? We have our giant hole in the ground! Concrete work should be able to start tomorrow. Everything is going well so far! As I mentioned in an earlier post, we are building on reclaimed coal mine land, so running into a few issues has not big a been surprise, even in week one. Of course, everyone who builds a house runs into issues, but our issues thus far have been specific to the nature of our land. When digging the foundation, the original “wish” for the position of the home had to be moved because the backhoe hit water and “fill dirt” from the previous mining when it began to dig. As a result, an engineer had to be called out to the building site. The engineer determined that:
So those are the changes so far, but we’re making progress day by day! I drove out to the property with Brad on Saturday to take a look at the progress. We met two of our neighbors, Joel and Terri, for the first time. They were out working in their driveway, and we were able to introduce ourselves. It’s nice to start getting acquainted with some of the folks on the road. Our “hole in the ground” looks so much bigger than even the pictures make it look. We could use a little less rain at this point in the game for sure. The road and the property are a muddy mess. As Brad showed me how the water drains around our barn – specifically the little stream running the back of it – he says, “Oh, and there are tadpoles swimming in that water.” I had to laugh out loud. You can always hear frogs at the pond, it seems. While we were out on the land, we saw the huge dragonflys being carried by the wind, and we were entertained by a crane flying as we drove out of the gravel road toward the highway. The last time, we saw a wild turkey. I sometimes wonder if we really know what we’re getting ourselves into, but we’re going to have a great spot for viewing wildlife. I’m sure that will prove to be its own adventure. On the way out, we also trimmed some gangly tree branches that the large equipment had battled Week 1 on the way to our property. That minor annoyance should be gone. Our Maisto Mountain home is off and running! We’ll see what Week 2 brings. | |
